Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, California 1986
Even though in 1985 BOC had played over 35 shows in the US alone and even a massive (never to be repeated) 17 date tour of the UK, 1985 yeilds pretty much no shows, and definately no radio or soundboard ones that I'm aware of have ever surfaced.
So onto 1986 with a famous show that was recorded by King biscuit flower hour.
The show was incomplete of course but is a faithful testament to the time with great moments.
Whilst 'Club Ninja' was released and has always had a bad rap the subsequent tour was altogether very good.
Opener 'R U Ready 2 Rock' is one of the best versions I've heard and even '(don't fear) The Reaper is pretty stellar. There's a few different versions of this show and some don't have 'Reaper' on them.
One of the most famous things about this is of course track 9 = 'Wings of Mercury'. Not a Cult original number but actually a cover version which is why there is NO studio version of this track ANYWHERE. That's because it was never recorded. It's been hoped that it was actually an outtake for 'Club Ninja' but I can assure it never was. How do I know? I asked Eric a few years back and at the time he said there was just no need to record it and even less to release it. Thankfully this show is also one of the 4 shows that is available for download in the 40th anniversary boxset so has finally got a release of sorts, because it's a great show with a terrific sound. Just wish there was more of it, as the original setlist is much longer.
Here's the track listing:
1. KBFH Introduction (0:54)
2. RU ready 2 rock (5:42)
3. White flag (4:56)
4. Take me away (6:53)
5. Dancin’ in the ruins (4:08)
6. Shadow warrior (5:39)
7. Burnin’ for you (4:48)
8. Goszilla (6:25)
9. Wings of Mercury (4:21)
10. Don’t fear (the reaper) (7:35)
And of course..
'Wings of Mercury' from this show..
