Live '81

This is a bit of a puzzling Radio show.
Firstly there's no venue or date from it. Upon intent listening there's also no mention at all in this short set where it may have been recorded.

The introduction Radio announcer does say 'From the BBC here's BOC' but he has an american accent so I'm 99.9% certain that this was not taken from the so called BBC rock hour as the BBC only used 2 American presenters at this time (Kid Jenson and Paul Gambachini) and the voice is neither of them.

In fact the BBC Rock hour changed it's name to 'In Concert' which was introduced by English Richard Skinner and the DJ voice is not him either so again it's highly unlikely that it's from the BBC, even though the official BOC site says it is.
And final 'proof' that this is NOT a BBC show is that Eric swears on the intro to 'Godzilla' and the BBC would NEVER have allowed the swearing let alone the 'F' word be broadcasted in 1981. It wasn't until 1985 that Madonna swore LIVE and there were so many complaints at the time, as it wasn't 'expected' from the BBC to allow this, so they had to issue a public apology.

So whilst we potentially part of the riddle solved we can establish that the existing cover artwork is not only crap but wrong.

So I've made my own yet again.
There is an amazing version of  '7 screaming Diz-busters' from this set which clocks in at over 15 mins.
In it Eric explains in detail how he became a rock 'n' roll star and signed a deal with the devil.
So utlising the old Black Sabbath compilation artwork from 1978 seemed the only right thing to do!!

Anyway we have a short set here which is either edited for Radio broadcast or was a support slot. I'm having trouble pinning the date down but i reckon from the song choice and the way certain songs are introduced, and that 'FOAUO' had just been released i'm going to go for sometime in June of 1981.And it's got Albert on drums. I do know however that's it's NOT from Bonds or Spit though.

Stellar quality here, just a few mistakes here and there but with the already mentioned extended '7 screaming diz-busters' and an extended '(Don't Fear) The Reaper' clocking in at over 7 and a half minutes, with an extended solo from Buck that is simply superb you can't go wrong.

If anyone does have any information on this show then please let me know and I can update this post and give you credit of course.

Try and get hold of this show, it's definately worth seeking it out.

Track listing:
1. ETI
2. Veteran of the Psychic wars
3. 7 Screaming Diz-busters
4. Joan Crawford
5. Burnin' for you
6. Godzilla
7. (Don't fear) The Reaper

Resada, California 1981

Recorded at the country club in Resada this is one of the last of the 'Fire of Unknown origin' tour dates. It was broadasted via satellite so thankfully we have a great sounding show.
For me this is another of my TOP shows. The track listing has remained pretty standard throughout and this album really does sound like ETL. At first hearing 'Red and the black sounds IDENTICAL to the ETL version. But it's not.upon further listens i had to really double take on it and listen VERY carefully and there's literally a couple of notes that are different. That is amazing for a band to
play that good.
An alternative cover is below.

The other big thing about this show is cof course the last track 'Roadhouse Blues' has Robbie Kreiger on it and it is the version on ETL.
When I first heard the ETL version (some 25+ years ago!!) I always loved the track. I'm a fan of the Doors and have many of their shows too, but for me this version by BOC is the very best (although Spit Club, California 1981-comes a close second). I know some fans don't like it and would have preferred the album to have a couple more of 'BOC' tunes on it rather than a 9 minute cover, but personally I think they made the right decision.Even though it HAS been edited, changed albiet very slightly on ETL
I also thought when listening to ETL that the crowd was amazing and it must have been a 20,000 strong crowd. Imagine my suprise when I finally saw the webcast and the track to see the actual crowd size of just a couple of thousand.
Here is the full track listing..

CD 1. 46:57
1. Dr. Music (3:42)
2. E.T.I. (5:18)
3. Hot Rails to Hell (4:54)
4. The Red & the Black (4:36)
5. Cities on Flame (6:04)
6. Joan Crawford (5:24)
7. Burnin’ for You (5:01)
8. Veteran of the Psychic Wars (8:31)
9. ME 262 (3:27)
CD 2. 33:43
1. Godzilla (11:07)
2. Bass Solo (3:13)
3. Born to be wild (8:12)
4. (Don’t Fear) the Reaper (6:59)
5. Heavy Metal (4:12)
6. Roadhouse Blues (9:12) - Removed from many versions due to it being on ETL. I simply added it back on mine, to complete the show!!

So here for you now is:
'Roadhouse Blues' featuring 'Robbie Kreiger' of 'The Doors' playing LIVE at the Resada 1981...See if you can find the differences to the ETL version!!

Sportatorium Hollywood, Florida 1981 DVD

There's a couple of different covers as an option here on this MTV show from 1981. This gig is so beyond famous it's ridiculous. A mere 11 songs(12 if you count the intro) in the set but 7 of them were selected for the legendary live album 'Extra Terrestrial Live - ETL' so just know the standard is par excellence.
I much prefer the cover artwortk below as it's includes the part of the cover of ETL obviously acknowledging the 7 songs chosen for the live album.

Rick Downey is on fire and brings his hard hitting style beautifully.Every band member is on fire. What I find interesting is that it shows that 'ETL' was not 'made and corrected in the studio'.
It really is a true representation of the show.

'The Red and the black' opens the proceedings (strangely enough it was track 4 on ETL) and it's hell for leather from start to finish.
Yes this contains the 'Definitive' 'version of 'Veteran of the psychic wars' featuring 'that' famous guitar solo.
It's all hear in glorious stereo and for you to view. It's a great show with just 'Cities on Flame', 'ME262','Born to be Wild' and 'Roadhouse Blues' not making the grade for ETL.
I've thought so many times about doing an audio rip for this and one day I'm sure I'll get round to it but for now, when I feel like listening to it only it's just easier to put on ETL.

Here's the track listing..
01 - Intro
02 - The Red and the Black
03 - Eti
04 - Joan Crawford
05 - Burnin' for You
06 - Cities on Flame
07 - Veteran of the Psychic War
08 - Me 262
09 - Godzilla

10- Born to be Wild
11 - Don't Fear the Ripper
12 - Roadhouse Blues

And for your viewing pleasure...Well, as it happens to be deleted..
Here is the full show (Just wish the picture was a little lighter) And what is Buck doing wearing that?!!!!

New Haven, Connecticut 1981

Recorded at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, New Haven, Connecticut, hence the title of this show.
Radio show which has exceptional quality and one of the first bootlegs to feature a Buck LONG solo on 'Veteran of the Psychic wars'.
Playing to a crowd of over 9,000 this show the band are once again on fire.
Truly great show and yet another winner from the '81 tour.
This comes in some different formats and here is a different cover albiet a bland.

The sound quality is absolutely fantastic and this show is just so enjoyable.
'7 Screaming Diz Busters' crops up for the first (and last) times on this tour. Unfortunately 'The Red and the Black' isn't on it (man I love that track-especially with Rick Downey) . Albert's been out of the band for a whole month now but you'd never guess as the band are tight with few mistakes providing a rockin' time for everyone. Really glad this got captured in such great quality,
HIGHLY recommended to all.

Chicago International Amphitheatre 1981

One of the early bootlegs featuring new drummer Rick Downey. He'd only been in the band a couple of months since the firing of Albert Bouchard. And he does an admirable job. To be truthful I really enjoyed this era of the band, and whilst many people moan that Albert left I think personally that the live shows with Rick in 1981 and 1982 were fantastic. His much heavier style of drumming really suited the setlist they doing at the time.
This was recorded for the Loop in the US.

The artwork pictured below uses the ETL cover to full effect. The show itself is a brilliant one and the band are really loose and it works well. 'Roadhouse blues' features Robbie Kreiger but the version isn't as good as the Resada,California one recorded 2 months later also with Robbie which was used for ETL.
Strong setlist again and a great intro of 'Godzilla' as well.
Sound Quality isn't quite there with a nasty hiss over the proceedings taking it away from what would have been an immense radio show, nevertheless it comes recommended.

CD1.
1.Dr.Music
2.The Red and the Black
3.ETI
4.Hot Rails to Hell
5.Joan Crawford
6.Burin' for you
7.Cities on Flame
8.Veteran of the Psychic wars
CD2.
1.ME262
2.Godzilla
3.Bass Solo
4.Born to be Wild
5.(Don't fear) The Reaper
6.Roadhouse Blues

'Joan Crawford' was still gettin a lot of airplay at this time so below is the video for you. (Yes it does have Albert on).

Bonds international, New York 1981

A fantastic sounding radio show that is a good as any official release. Very famous show that has inspired and different artwork and titles over the years.Although the date on this copy is marked as 18th June 1981 when in fact it was the 16th.
The most popular title is 'The Thing' which is pictured above.
Most in part due to the sound quality which is utterely phenomenal.

Below are some more covers for this show. Some of these versions are incomplete shows though.

More reserved than the Spit Club show recorded the day before and on this site, but nevertheless this is in the MUST HAVE pile (somewhere near the top).
A great show and companion to ETL because it has some tracks that didn't make that album.
'Fire of unknown origin' is simply fantastic. Nice to see 'Flaming Telepaths' in the set as this track often gets neglected from 'Secret Treaties' due to their being so many great tracks from that album.
Heavy metal black and the silver is just power and I've nver understood why that never made the cut on E.T.L, maybe the band felt there would be too many 'Fire of unknown origin' tracks on it'.
It first surfaced as part one of the double CD set 'Tales from the Pyschic wars'. Later it was re-released as 'Alive in New York'.
This show is one of the 4 shows selected as a download as part of the bands 40th anniversary box set.The only downside being that 'that' version is edited with some tracks missing.
So try and get THIS version as it's sound quality is immense and it's complete.

Here's the track listing :

CD 1. 46:36
1. Dr. Music (4:20)
2. E.T.I. (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) (5:21)

Spit Club, Levittown, New York 1981

This is another great radio show and one my personal faves. It's just all perfect. The setlist, the artwork (love this cover photo) and the quality is excellent too.
Basically although recorded for radio broadcast it was a warm up for the massive 'Bonds International' show the following day (which was also broadcasted all over the States and is also featured on this site) . The band are also playing tracks from the newly released legendary album 'Fire of an Unknown Origin'.
The band are on fire on this show and really Rockin'.
The version of 'Roadhouse Blues' is one of the best versions you'll EVER hear. Eric introduces it as the song 'All about the Long Island expressway' (I didn't know that). Anyway this is a show that if you love Blue Oyster Cult you NEED to own. It also goes under the name of 'Cities on Flame in New York'.
